Last Presentation for CP5080!

http://code.google.com/p/honours-3d-paluma/wiki/DownloadsDirectory

I updated that earlier today with the presentations and the papers that I worked on.

Today I presented the following:
Not sure how I've gone, but was a bit... weird presenting three different items at once, and trying to remember everything. The presentation of my lit review was by far the easiest though.

... I have to mention, presentations do feel a bit weird when questions aren't asked at the end. Though I guess it comes down to if a, the audience is interested in the topic, b, were they paying attention, or c, did you explain it enough that they understood everything anyway (and aren't curious for more info)

Ah well. Good learning/presentation experience none-the-less

BU4061: Presentation Questions

Overview of items looked at today during the final seminar for BU4061

Questions asked during biography presentations.

  • What is DBA? Like MBA, but higher. Worth 120k and not claimable on HECS
  • Autism - High Functioning Autism: Did Temple Grandin have many issues with her disability? Issues of bullying while in school. As an adult, had issues with harassment in workplace, though in academia is respected.
  • Conferences? Conferences not common in early career, though in later stages, larger volume of conferences presented, and is also now lecturing.
  • Noted as being very observant - how did she make her discoveries? Re: Stressed Animals Could relate to cattle because of autism. Felt there were similarities.
  • Grandin: How many publications with other academics? Very few
  • Kaplan: At 17 years old, enrolling in university - US, normally 18 years? Unsure
  • Conferences? Presentations, not many - teaches at the school. Done a lot of course work.
  • By 1st, 2nd and 3rd author - in what sense does that apply? Alphabetical order or something else?
Conclusion of subject:

Paradigms, Disciplines, Tribes, Individuals
  • Looking at the concepts, of what they mean and how they work in research
  • Methods of data collection
  • Methodology - recruiting people, researcher position, form of analysis
  • Paradigms - what type of paradigm are you working within
Cultures of Research Beyond University
  1. Business Research and the Consulting Culture
  2. Government Research and Policy Culture
  3. Academic Culture
Business:
  • Developing Profitability
  • Protect and build a case against regulations and perceived problems and deal with change
  • Paradigms: often positivist or post positivist
  • Methods: dependent on consultants, surveys, plus archival data
  • Developing systems, eg, HR, which are sold and promoted, eg. future business forecasts
  • Time and timing - strict timelines
  • Payment - variable
  • Not open to refutation - limited circulation of reports
Government:
  • Assist in development of policy and regulation
  • Respond to problems arising in the community
  • Paradigms: Post Positivist (can also be interpretative)
  • Methods: eclectic, largely review and profiling, surveys
  • Development: inter-government referencing, some academic use
  • Payment - good generally, reliable
  • Time frames - varied, including desirable delay
  • Open to refutation - acceptable, public
Clash of worlds
  • Topics allocated, not selected
  • Answers are generally 'desired' = client satisfaction
  • Big occasions of presenting work - presentations big issue
Relevant De-constructed
  • Time - when
  • Sector - agriculture, manufacturing, service, etc
  • Scale - local, regional, state, national
  • Focus - hotel, all hotels, all accommodation
  • Domain - economic, socio-cultural, environmental, administrative
  • Style - generating facts or ideas or new perspectives: emancipactory or functional
Knowledge Management
  • Is about 3 or 4 steps in the process about deciding what you are doing
  • Knowledge Capture - understanding what people know and aligning research objects with that knowledge
  • Knowledge Codification - translating findings into decision rules or systems
  • Knowledge Diffusion - sytles of delivery as well as roles of intermediaries
Wicked problems
  • Many business problems are wicked problems-complex multi-faceted, difficult to define a clear answer
Academy of Hope
  • Critical theory and an emancipatory paradigm turn attention to the possibilities of research and education to change the modes of education and build richer personal and public lives
  • When do we know enough? Enduring learning e.g. 'You're ready to graduate when the professor says so'
Subject Summary: Aim and hopefully partial achievement - to make explicit what we assume when undertaking research, to locate our research in a context of types of research to better understand our topic, the research of others and each other.

CP5080/CP5090 Presentation Feedback

Got my feedback for my presentations today, finally. (Paper Presentation: XML Compression Techniques and Paper Presentation: Virtual GIS)

Was good to see the feedback as I wasn't sure how I had been doing.

A few interesting points. Need to address that concern over colloquial expressions.
Hi Angela, here are some comments on your cp5090 presentations so far.

1. very good use of slides, except for an occasional tendency to present a slide that is extracted from a paper with far too much detail. If you need to discuss that much information you will have to find some way to summarize or otherwise digest it within a few slides.

2. generally very good at pacing and keeping your talk on track.

3. You are a bit careless in diction and locution (word choice and manner of speech). Informality is OK but don't slide into purely colloquial expressions.

4. Very good attention to paper's structure and meta data.

Overall grade: D.

Public Speaking

Randomly, while I'm finishing off some work...

Just found an interesting topic regarding speaking, or more specifically, how to avoid verbal pauses such as 'um', 'ah', etc...

My habit is 'and that', 'so yeah', 'and whatever'. Trying to improve this before I have to give a seminar.

Speech Writing and Photography

Was just trying to transcribe my speech earlier but battery is out on my livescribe pen and can't seem to find my cradle to charge it again. Got to really figure out where I put that...

I went out earlier and took some pictures of the area that I'm going to do the rough model of, they're 7MP photos so I'm hoping they will be high enough resolution.

On a side note, I was looking at the HX5 at work and really like the camera. 10MP but the lens quality looks fantastic and I really like the idea of intelligent panaroma as well as having in built GPS and compass feature where you can upload images directly into google earth.

Back to the photos... So I think I have a good amount there to do up some plane setup senarios, it's just finding the time to do it.

For this week, I've got my speech to hand in, gotta get my thesis proposal signed off (still), literature review, biography presentation as well as the other items which have begun piling up. So much work...

Thankfully I've only got work on the weekend so I have today free (where I've been working on BU4061) and Wednesday free, so using those days to catch up. Thursday morning to read the assigned paper (though may have to read more earlier as it is 28 pages).

AND when I get a chance... catch up on missed entries for this blog.

Discipline Analysis

Currently been sitting around finishing off the discipline analysis for presentation tomorrow.

I'm still stuck on this idea of writing an actual speech. Looking at the criteria we do have to hand in notes, so I may have to do a LiveScribe recording of my speech then transcribe them later. The actual notes for what I've used in reference for actually putting together my PowerPoint is easy enough though.

I find that with writing a speech I don't tend to follow them word for word. Rather picking out key words from the speech then talking about those related points... which is where the PowerPoint come in handy as they work as my palm cards.

I have to get around to uploading resources and what not on my google code page as well as I'm really not making use of the sources there. And also get the storage area set up for my thesis work/backups as Ian mentioned in the meeting on Friday.

Won't have a paper presentation for CP5080 this week, but will next week.

Tomorrow got to start with doing the modelling prototype-thing and also gotta finalise/check/sign off the thesis proposal as well. Ideally I would like to throw up some screenshots from the play-around-modelling concept in the proposal so that the reader can actually see what the modelling concept is rather then me trying to describe it in words. One of the ideas/concepts behind the actual project for business/development proposals anyway.

So, back to assignment now.

Proposed Work

I got woken up from my sleep at midnight despite going to bed at 8:30pm... so... this may or may not make much sense in my sleep deprived state..

So, over the course of this week, have got a lot of work to do.

*nods*
To do list:
  1. Finish off BU4061 Script to submit Tuesday
  2. Finish reading Pedro by Tuesday (mostly finished)
  3. Select 3 papers for presentations (CP5080)
  4. Finish off Critical Review for XML paper (do we just go up there and talk, use palm cards? I'm not sure on protocol)
  5. Finish off Project Proposal (draft) Friday - can't remember due date...
  6. Figure out other assessment that's due
  7. Find a better filing method other then "throw-in-the-corner-and-deal-with-it-later"
  8. Figure out what to do about laptop + Brisbane
  9. When in Brisbane, start modelling things in Maya (see above)
  10. Finish reading this paper: http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/stereoscopic_whitepaper_final08.pdf
Now, off to sleep.

Focusing on how to talk about presenting papers

Why was this particular paper picked? (Parallel Prefix Computation)
  • The paper is a landmark
  • Although printed in 1979, it is NOT obsolete
  • Short, only 7-8 pages
  • Author/s are still alive
  • Small references, --> at time, not many were available
Meta Data
  • What isn't text
  • --> Bibliography
  • --> Names
  • --> Etc
Content of Paper
Important
Presenter is obliged only to present which elements in depth. Depends on target audience. Generally for our presentation, audience will be much like ourselves.

Points
  • What is the idea/s of the paper?
  • --> Wider framework
  • --> How does this fit into the frame of computer science?
  • What are the authors trying to do?
  • What is the motivation?
  • --> Good way to convey points to audience
  • Relationships among results, what is the core?
How is the paper organised?
Functions? Logically organised?
Proofs? Defintions
--> THings well defined?
Originality and significance?
Does the paper have structural errors?

In ~1970, knowledge was limited 0 how to take sequential methods and make them parallel

\________________________/
This was a novel idea in the 1970's. The 'hook' of this paper is integer addition

Responsibility of the presenter -> What you think is central to the paper

Key point of the paper

ADDER_SIZE(n) = c.n
ADDER_DEPTH(n) = c.log2n

Cardinal Points

Paper Overview
  1. Introduction
  2. Parallel Prefix Computation
  3. FSA --> Boolean Circuit via PPC
  4. Application of (3) ... addition FSA
A good presenter should allow the audience to read the paper profitably. Should provide a road map of the presentation and paper.

Bullet points of paper
  • How to present
  • How to read intelligently.

Paper Presentations, Maths and Thought Trails

Ah, we just had the presentation example given to us by Bruce earlier for CP5090, and damn... The paper is well... pretty full on.

The paper is about parallel Prefix Composition, basically doing things in parallel rather then sequential and the principles behind it.

I have not properly looked at anything maths related since... Oh, about grade 11? 12? I dropped out of Maths C and switched to account in grade 11 because I didn't enjoy it. And that was some 4-5 years ago, so trying to wrap my head around the concepts being talked about in the paper - just straight over my head.

Regardless though, it was interesting to get an idea of what kind of presentations we have to do for our own in week 7 onwards.

Main points to look at for presentations:
  • What is the idea of the paper? Or ideas?
  • What is the author trying to achieve?
  • What is the motivation for the paper?
  • Looking at the relationships amongst the results, what is the core element?
  • How to convey the information to the audience?
"A good presenter should allow the audience to gain enough knowledge from the presentation to read the paper profitably. It should read as a map of the presentation and of the paper."

Now, here's hoping the papers that I get assigned I can at least read. If I can avoid anything maths related (kinda hard if its computer science) then that'd be alright. I'm not exactly sure what type of papers we have to look at. A tourism one probably wouldn't be so bad as it ties in to the project, impacts and what not. Then a gaming one with how people interact in virtual environments (seeing as we haven't got the gaming virtual reality stuff completely down pat yet - but the technology is there) and maybe something else... I dunno. I'll have to find out anyway.

Note to self: See if there are recordings of people doing a critical literature review at all, and see how one plays out in reality rather then as an example.

Found out about CP4100 as well. Tis a thesis subject. Placeholder if you will. In other words, more free time! Hurray! Currently I'm sitting in the computer labs in the uni, and I think I'm going to have to get into the habit of coming out here and working at least until I can get some office space. As stated earlier, distractions at home = very time consuming. The labs are good in the late afternoons, but during the day, hectic, especially when students are clambering around looking for computers to use. Particularly the first years. Library may be an option. *ponders*

I think I may have to invest in a second computer/laptop when I get back from Brisbane. My current laptop I think is slowly dying and I need to take it in for repair but still using it for uni. Keeps making funny sounds and I think the DVD drive may not work. That and it randomly freezes up on me, despite doing a full clean a week or so ago. PC at home I'm paranoid about it crashing. Got backups and what not, but still paranoid.

Must invest in a blu-ray burner for this project. External harddrives are good and all for backup purposes but past experience has taught me that harddrives are not 100% reliable. Subject to crashes, data corruption and loss. At least blu-rays, like DVDs and CDs are hard copies where you only really loose the data if it a) scratches (very hard to scratch a blu-ray, I've only seen two scratched PS3 discs before, and they were stepped on), b) cracks or c) becomes lost. I checked the pricing, it's not too bad. Should be able to pick one up for under $200. Plus the discs get a good 25GB out of them, without Dual-Layer, so perfect to keep full HD renders and models on.

Ah, I think there may be a class coming in soon. People keep slowly weeding their way into the room. So shall leave it at that for now.
